In 1946, Nancy Evelyn Brandon called members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. living in Rochester, NY together with the purpose of forming a graduate chapter. They petitioned the North Atlantic Regional Director, Sophie Fowler to begin a graduate chapter here. Following a year of intense work, on February 17, 1947, Delta Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was chartered in Rochester, NY at the home of Lydia Bodie Peyton. A group of seven Sorority members stood together to form the new chapter. The chartering members came from various chapters throughout the United States. The charter members were: Nancy Evelyn Brandon, Edythe A. P. Kearns, Ella Parham, Lydia Bodie Peyton, Letha Brown Ridley, Ann Durr Rose and Dorothy Ruth Young.
Delta Nu Omega was one of nine graduate chapters formed in 1947 and the fourteenth post war chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. to be established. The chapter was chartered under the 12th International President, Edna Over Campbell of Baltimore, MD, and was the fourth graduate chapter chartered in New York State.
From these seven visionaries Delta Nu Omega has grown to a chapter of more than sixty women who actively work to fulfill the purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Our membership includes women with a myriad of professions and talents working together to be of service to all mankind. We are blessed and honored to have our first President and Charter Member, Letha Brown Ridley, as a current, active member. In July 2011, the chapter and Rochester community celebrated her 100th birthday. Soror Letha is still going strong at 101.
