Our History

In 1946, Nancy Evelyn Brandon called members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. living in Rochester, NY together with the purpose of forming a graduate chapter.

Welcome to the Delta Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

….Serving the Rochester community since 1947.

Since January 15, 1908, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated has made its membership available to serve, encourage, and promote the needs of others. Our service transcends beyond the boundaries of our community to provide service globally throughout the world.

Delta Nu Omega Chapter fosters these relationships through community service programs and community impact days which  includes the five international targets:

  1. Empower Our Families
  2. Build Our Economic Wealth
  3. Enhance Our Environment
  4. Advocate for Social Justice
  5. Uplift Our Local Community

Delta Nu Omega continues to lead the way in service and sisterhood. The chapter’s program activities revolve around critical issues impacting today’s families and communities. Our community programs are purposeful and progressive and promote economic growth, youth mentoring, education and scholarship and health and wellness. Through our members’ dedication and commitment, we are making a positive impact on the Rochester area.

Delta Nu Omega has a rich and storied legacy of serving all mankind and currently our chapter is Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood. Delta Nu Omega continues to make history with commitment, dedicated service, and exceptional programming. It is through ―service to all mankind‖ that the sorority will prosper and be an ever present light in the community. We impact communities through unparalleled service, philanthropic efforts and scholarly endeavors.

Our visionary founders were exceptional, not only for their ability to conceive and organize the fourteenth postwar chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, but also for their individual commitments to improve the social condition of Rochester. Their legacy and tenacious spirit is a part of the lifeblood of Delta Nu Omega.

We strive and we do because of the broad shoulders on which we stand! We are the hopes and dreams of these divine ladies and we are honored and privileged to follow the path they set before us. Through the years we have committed to things that are worthwhile and providing services with a smile. Delta Nu Omega has delivered exceptional quality programs that answered the call of our community’s needs and the national program agenda.

In 1946, Nancy Evelyn Brandon called members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. living in Rochester, NY together with the purpose of forming a graduate chapter. They petitioned the North Atlantic Regional Director, Sophie Fowler to begin a graduate chapter here. Following a year of intense work, on February 17, 1947, Delta Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was chartered in Rochester, NY at the home of Lydia Bodie Peyton. A group of seven Sorority members stood together to form the new chapter. The chartering members came from various chapters throughout the United States. The charter members were: Nancy Evelyn Brandon, Edythe A. P. Kearns, Ella Parham, Lydia Bodie Peyton, Letha Brown Ridley, Ann Durr Rose and Dorothy Ruth Young.

Delta Nu Omega was one of nine graduate chapters formed in 1947 and the fourteenth post war chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. to be established. The chapter was chartered under the 12th International President, Edna Over Campbell of Baltimore, MD, and was the fourth graduate chapter chartered in New York State.

From these seven visionaries Delta Nu Omega has grown to a chapter of more than sixty women who actively work to fulfill the purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Our membership includes women with a myriad of professions and talents working together to be of service to all mankind. We are blessed and honored to have our first President and Charter Member, Letha Brown Ridley, as a current, active member. In July 2011, the chapter and Rochester community celebrated her 100th birthday. Soror Letha is still going strong at 101.

The women of DNO continually respond to society’s increasing complex issues by empowering the Rochester community through chapter programs and the charitable support of our foundation, the non-profit affiliate arm of the chapter. Our service initiatives, scholarship assistance, educational intervention and other progressive programs are designed to have a direct and immediate impact on our community. Delta Nu Omega Chapter is not only committed to fostering a sisterhood among African-American women, but also impacting the Rochester community through our commitment to service, civic engagement, outreach and global leadership through timeless service.
